About Our Mission
Why It Matters
Real life is never simple. Girls’ lives are complicated and messy – but Ohio girls are also resilient.
We wanted to take an honest, hard look at how Ohio girls are faring today. The truth is, girls are not okay, and they deserve better. Girl Scouts is in the perfect position to give girls what they deserve. Girl Scouts has more than 113 years of experience in meeting girls’ needs.
“I was generally aware that there was an issue with girls’ mental health…but the reality of the hard-hitting numbers appalled me, perhaps because I’m an engineer and data speaks. Girls (and women) are asked to step-up and be strong and courageous, and yes, as adults we need to help them do that. But we need the ecosystem around them — policy makers, schools, youth organizations — to courageously step-up and proactively address these issues.”
Nancy Dawes, President of BEWEL (Buckeye Engineering Women in Executive Leadership), Co-Chair of Ohio: State of the Girl Report, and long-time Girl Scout volunteer
Together, Ohio Girl Scout Councils gathered hard-hitting data and statistics to evaluate the state of girls. We partnered with the University of Cincinnati Evaluation Services Center and The Center for Community Solutions to conduct the research and create this report. Our findings will help us, and the entire community, better understand girls, so we can ignite change. The more we understand their needs, the better equipped we will be to advocate for them and create meaningful, lasting change.
The report will serve as a valuable resource for Girl Scout councils, community organizations, and policymakers to guide future program development, funding decisions, and advocacy efforts. It aims to inspire new efforts and investments to improve the well-being of girls across Ohio.
